It appears there are some very knowledgeable people on this site and I could use some help. I would like to make a reservation for the overnight train from Paris to Milan on June 13, 2008. I don't have a railpass at this point but am considering purchasing a multi country one as I will be visiting other countries. The cost I come up with is $360 for three people with a pass. Also is it normal to have to pay extra, not just on overnight even when you have a pass. Thanks for your help.
Here's Rick's writeup on that click here where you can read about using a pass on overnight trains, scroll down about half way. There's additional info if you click above on Railpasses.
I would say that in most cases of regular trains in Europe, it's not necessary to pay extra. However, on night trains, the pass covers only the rail portion. Use of the accommodations is extra. Also, "premium" trains, such as Thalys or Italian Eurostar, are more expensive and thus require a supplement over and above your rail pass. For most trains, like the ICE in Germany, you don't have to have a reservation; if you want one, it's extra (~€4). Occasionally, on very popular trains, reservations are required; then they are still extra. Regional trains never require an extra charge.
Popular night train routes can sell out weeks in advance. Make your reservation for Paris-Milan ASAP.
Thank you all very much. I purchased the ticket and reservation this morning.
