Has anybody taken this train recently? I am travelling solo and I have never been on an overnight train. I am considering this solely to gain more sightseeing time. Is the train safe? Can I get my own compartment, can I lock the compartment? Any advice about overnight train travel will be appreciated. Thank you.

I took that train last year (also solo). You will have no problems, it is safe. I booked a few days before and had no problems getting a bed. I would suggest getting a 3 person sleeper or less. The couchettes are very cramped. With the sleeper they will put you in a compartment with other females. You can lock it too.
