overnight train Paris to Rome

We are hoping to book an overnight train from Paris to Rome for early July. My husband and I are traveling with our 3 children, 16, 12 and 7. Our agent has recommended sleeper compartments for 2 and for 3 so that we do not have to share with a stranger. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I disagree with your travel agent and agree with Steve.

Three beds in a 3-person sleeper, with one of them getting a child's fare, will cost €340. Two beds in a 2-person sleeper will cost €280. That's a total of €620.

If you book all six bunks in a 6-person couchette, with five of them being adults and one being a child, the standard fare is €640. However, if you book ASAP (up to three months in advance) at www.tgv-europe.com, you can get a Prem's fare as low as €225 or a Depart fare as low as €325. To keep the site in English and to avoid being bumped to the Rail Europe site which doesn't offer discount fares, choose Great Britain as your country of residence. To get the cheapest fare, book as soon as the three-month window opens.
