Overnight Train- London to Inverness

Has anyone taken this train? We are considering it as a way to quickly get north. We will be traveling with a 5 and 6 year old in July. Seemed like it could be fun for a kid, but maybe not if sleep is not in the cards due to noise and motion. Any advice?

I'm not sure about this trip--have you checked that it's direct? I will say that my sister took her 5 and 7 year-olds on the Lake Shore Limited from Rochester NY to Chicago last month. The 5 year old was out like a light as long as you would hope for. The 7-year old had more trouble. He was more wound up about train travel. I think that the kids can probably sleep better than the adults. ; ) Pam

I haven't taken the Caledonian Sleeper, but I would love to someday. If you book far enough in advance, you can get Bargain Berths for as low as £19/person. You'll need two 2-bed berths with a parent and child sharing each one. You can read all about the train on the ScotRail site here. If you need further convincing that this is a good way to go, see here.
