Has anyone taken this overnight train from Venice to Ljubljana? It leaves Venice at 9:20 p.m and arrives after 1:00 a.m. I'm wondering about then getting transportation to our hotel at that time of the morning.
That sounds painful to me. For a 3-ish hour train trip, I'd leave before noon or after midnight.
Unfortunately that't s the only time that I find going from Venice to Ljubljana.
It's weird that it's only a two and a half hour drive but a direct train takes four twenty. Have you considered driving? As a new entrant into the EU, many Slovenian roads are brand new and in perfect condition! Some of the sites you could enjoy by car include the Soca Valley, the Julian Alps, Lake Bled, the Skocjan Caves (a UNESCO natural wonder) and a bit further south (in Croatia), but totally worth the drive,... Plitvice Lakes!
You could take the Hydrofoil to Piran (I know I saw a Hertz there), then drop off the car in Ljubljana when you're done.
It's just so much more expensive to rent the car in Venice, but clearly timewise it is the best choice. We had originally looked into taking the train to Trieste, bus to Koper to rent the car, but that process was going to take us 8 hours to end up in Bovec [INVALID] just seems like too much hassle & time. So my options now are to rent the car in Italy for more money or take a train at an inconvenient time and save a few hundred $$$.
Just check out the schedule: http://www.find-croatia.com/ferries-croatia/ferry-venice-piran.php ... - ... It's 2.5 hours and you're in Slovenia for a reasonable rental rate and no extra drop-off fee in Ljubljana.
