Overnight train from Nice to Venice....is it safe?

We are going to be traveling throughout France and Italy and planned on taking the overnight train from Nice to Venice. We planned on getting just the private, 2-person compartment.

Unfortunately, I have read several things online regarding overnight train robberies/people being gassed to remain sleeping, etc. Not sure if this is true or just some sort of urban legend??

Having never been to Europe and being something of a worrywart anyways....I am now hesitant at traveling this way.

We consider ourselves to be fairly savvy travelers...we try to stay aware, don't keep money in obvious places, etc.

Am I right to be concerned regarding this train trip? If so, what alternate ways would recommend for traveling between the cities? I've looked into some flights, which seem to be quite expensive.

And lastly, is train travel safe in general?

Thank you for any responses. I hate to be so nervous about this, but I would rather know up front if it's a real concern.

What you read is an urban legend. In general, train travel is safe. Couchettes and compartments lock from the inside. Since you won't be sharing the compartment with anyone, you should have no problems whatsoever.

Thank you for alleviating my fears....I was hoping it was just some sort of urban legend. I appreciate it! :)

My wife and I have traveled Europe via train for two decades and never encountered problems. Dorsey

Have you found trains cheaper then flights, we certainly didn't! I guess it does save a night in a hotel so that counts for something.
