Overnight train from Munich to Prague

Ok, so I have been looking online to try and find recommendations for travel from Munich to Prague but all of the posts are from a few years ago. Before I run to a trip planner (because I am SO confused) I figured i'd post first and see if someone can help me. From what I understand only certain train companies run from Munich to Prague at night. Are there only certain days of the week? We are planning on leaving on a Sunday taking the night train from Munich to Berlin. Can anyone familiar with the route let me know what my options are to travel? I found one route on the http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/prices/germany/laender_tickets.shtml site but it cost about 130 euro.. is that normal?! I had read it was much cheaper. We are traveling from Germany to Prague to Berlin to Amsterdam all in about 14 days. Should I look into buying a euro pass? I think I read it doesn't work in the Czech? Ok, sorry for all of the questions! My first trip was last year to Italy.. now that I am country hopping I think I might be over my head :)

Raquel, Could you elaborate on why you want to use a night train from Munich to Prague? There are numerous trips during the day, which only take ~4 hours (train or Bus). It's a very easy trip! The trip from Berlin to Prague is also very easy (~6 hours as I recall), as is the trip from Berlin to Amsterdam. You can check all your transportation connections on the Bahn.de website, which provides information for most of Europe. Using a Railpass wouldn't be my choice, but you'll have to do the math and compare the cost of P-P tickets with a Railpass. A three country Selekt Pass should work, but of course you'd have to pay any compulsory reservation fees separately. The rail website listed above will show those routes where reservations are compulsory. I'm not too familiar with the discounted tickets in Germany, but hopefully Lee or one of the others can provide that information. It may be less expensive to pre-purchase tickets, although that may lock you into a specific departure time. Happy travels!

I'm not sure what you want. The url you provided only gives me the start page for the Bahn (???). 130 Euro? For one person? There are no direct night trains from Munich to Prague. It isn't far enough. I do see an overnight connection from Munich to Prague via Dresden with a 3½ hour stopover in Hof, but it is not night trains and it's a rather roundabout connection. There is a day connection by overland coach run by the Bahn from Munich to Prague in 4h40min. The max fare for that connection is €61/p, but with advance purchase it's only €29/p. As for Länder-Tickets, you can use a Bayern-Böhmen-Ticket (€29,50 for two people) to go by regional train to Pilsen (slightly longer, timewise, then by bus) and then purchase a Czech Rail ticket for about €6 (151 Kc) for Pilsen to Prague (so, about €21/p).

I guess I just read about night trains giving me more day time in one city with the ability to sleep on the train and wake up in a new city... and that sounded perfect! But I guess six hours may not even be worth it.

I had read a few forums that took me to the web page I posted. On the Bahn website I clicked the night travel link and searched for flights which is where I say the 130 euro. Like I said I am so confused I probably have been looking into this all wrong. Thank you so much for posting the other methods of going. That is exactly what I was looking for. I didn't know where to begin to look for other options and I hoped that posting here someone would help. Which you both did! Thank youuuu!

In order to make effective use of night trains you need to travel between locations that are ten to twelve hours apart with min change of trains - preferably one stop at most. Otherwise you do not get any sleep. Munich and Prague are not that far apart. With the the wide spread availability of high speed trains, the value of night trains has diminished because the in between times are so much shorter.

Raquel, Your plan to do the night train option, going from Munich to Berlin on the CNL, is fine. That gets you in at Berlin Hbf a little after 0800. If you're in Berlin for a few days, good, but if you're going to continue on to Prague, upon arrival at Berlin Hbf, you can take the next direct train, which arrives in Prague before 1330. This is what I would do since that Munich-Berlin CNL offers the armchair sleeping option. Berlin-Prague direct is under 5 hrs. You still have most of the afternoon in Prague. If you decide to get a Pass, don't include Holland or CZ. Buy tickets to cover that portion of the ride.
