Overnight train from Milan to Paris

My wife and I are considering taking an overnight train from Milan to Paris. I have looked at two web sites; Rail Europe and Euro Railways. The Rail Europe is a total of $36 less than the Euro Railways. Other than the price, is there a big difference between the two? Are there other web sites to inquire? Thanks for your help. Tom

Rail Europe and Euro Railways essentially are travel agencies and they charge extra for the tickets they sell. You'll do better booking with the train companies that cooperate in offering the night train service, either trenitalia.com or thello.com. Book ASAP (up to 120 days in advance) to get the lowest fare. There is an allotted number of discount fare tickets and they sell out quickly.

The only night train I know of is the one run by Thello that we took last July. We used a couchette for 6 that was typical of other couchettes we have used before except that the bottom bunk was ridiculously close to the middle bunk (maybe 18" between them) making the person on the bottom pretty miserable. I have no idea what private compartments for two looked like. Our train was 7 hours late into paris due to mechanical problems (but obviously that doesn't happen all the time). Even if we had not been late, I would have considered it to be not a great experience. We have had better overnight trains (and worse, too). We got our tickets 120 days ahead on the Trenitalia web site for the "Smart" fare of 35 Euros each. A private compartment for two would be quite a bit more, I'm sure. But Trenitalia (or Thello if you can understand French) will almost certainly sell the tickets for less than Rail Europe, which is just a ticket broker service, and always take a cut for profit. Buying as soon as the tickets go public can save a lot of money.

Thanks Tim. I checked out both and they were less expensive. Appreciate your help and quick reply.

Randy, the Thello site now has an English version. Tom, if you go with a couchette rather than a sleeper to save money, definitely choose a 4-bunk one rather than a 6-bunk one. All couchettes are the same size. The only difference is in how many bunks are pulled down. It's worth paying a little more for the extra room for both people and luggage.
