has anyone taken the overnight train from budapest to prague? it's described as "comfort, restricted first class". what can anyone tell me about it? would you recommend it? i'm a single female travelling solo.
I can't help you on the night train. We trained from Budapest to Prague during the day - took about 6 1/2 hours.
Have you taken a night train before? We took one from Paris to Salzburg and it was a nightmare for me...NO sleep.
I've been doing quite a bit of research on travel connections between the big cities of Eastern Europe.
Budapest to Prague is not one you want to do on the night train unless you don't mind getting in a 3:32 a.m.
There are other choices, but they all seem to include a midnight layover in Vienna with a walk to another platform.
Prague to Budapest is a different story. One leaves at 10 p.m., gets in at 7 a.m., not too many stops and only a couple are of 15 - 20 min. duration.
I'm guessing the 15ish minute stops involve adding/dropping cars, which can wake you up.
If you're seeing something I've missed, let me know. I too would love to start the city tour in Budapest.
Budapest-Krakow-Prague works, even though the Krakow to Prague night gets in at 6:40 a.m.
P.S. - It's not an urban myth, "Benadryl" works wonders for sleeping on the train.
The actual active ingredient is diphenhydramine HCl, same as in "Sominex."
Don't buy name brands though, I get allergy relief generic from my HMO.
