Is there any alternative to the expensive "hotel" train if you want a night train from Barcelona to Paris? Thanks.
Yes, there is. You can take a regional train from Barcelona Sants to Cerbere, departing at 17:16 and arriving at 20:00. Then take a direct night train from Cerbere to Paris Austerlitz, departing at 21:21 and arriving at 07:27. For detailed timetables, go to the German Rail site.
Perfect, thanks so much!
Keep in mind one thing - it will be very difficult if not impossible to buy a ticket for the French train from Cerbere to Paris.
By the time the local train arrives in Cerbere, the train will be under conductor control, so you have to buy your sleeping accomodation from the conductor standing on the platform.
With the long slow death of night trains in Europe, this train usually has lot of room available.
I've purchased my couchette reservation on the platform twice with no issues. The last time (April 09) I ended up being one of two people in a six person couchette.
Addendum to my previous post:
The first sentence should read - "it will be very difficult if not impossible to buy your couchette reservation / ticket for the French train from Cerbere to Paris in Spain. The SNCF & RENFE reservation computers have difficulty communicating."
Why not check out airberlin.com? You didn't say when you are going,or how many are traveling, however, check their website and it might be cheaper. Personally, I always check one against the other.
To add on to Jerry's comment about flying, both Vueling and easyJet have multiple flights each day between Barcelona and Paris. Vueling flies into Orly and easyJet into CDG. They seem to be starting in the 35 Euro range for summer. We ended up flying a few years ago instead of taking the train.
We have Eurail passes (2 of us) so we will be on the train.
