Overnight train from Amsterdam to Prague- sleeping arrangements?

My husband and I are considering doing the overnight train between Amsterdam and Prague this July.

On the train website, I read this:

"Depending on the night train, you have the choice between compartments with 1, 2 or 3 berths. You can decide yourself how many people you would like to share the compartment with. The sleeper car area is divided by sex, so if you are travelling with your partner, you will have to occupy your own compartment. If you are travelling alone in the sleeper car, single occupancy would then be required."

Does this mean that my husband and I would need to book 2 separate single sleeping compartments, or would we reserve a compartment with 2 berths? I"ve never seen one of these trains. I would prefer, if we go this option, that we have some kind of sleeping arrangements where we can lie totally flat. Having a private compartment for the 2 of us would be ideal. For those of you with experience on these overnight trains, what arrangements do you recommend?

Also, what is a "day couch?"

Julene, you and your husband can book a comartment for 2 (double occupancy). I think what they are trying to say is that if you book a triple or quad then you would be sharing with another person, and that is when they must be single sex compartments. Yes, you will be lying totally flat. The beds are about the size of a military bunk (mayble slightly more narrow). On some of the trains the top bunk folds up and the bottom bunk then becomes a "couch".

Thanks for the reply!

So a 'day couch" reservation would be such that it would fold flat to sleep on? Those seem to be the most reasonable on the train site, and if we could get a private day couch compartment, that would be ideal

The service from Amsterdam to Prague is run by DB/City Nightline. The sleepers described above are much roomier than a military bunk. There are two types:standard and deluxe. Standard includes the beds, table, chairs, and a sink. Deluxe has all that plus shower and toilet! A "Day Couch" is a regular reclining seat-not recommended for a 15 hour overnight journey:)

Thanks to all for the great information!

I did see the flight- which is a possible option- It arrives quite late into Prague, which is my only concern (would love an am flight on the 16th).

I"m going to talk this all over with my husband and see what we think- a hotel + airfare seems to balance out with the cost of the train... and a train trip might be a fun adventure!

You won't be spending a day on the train-you'll be spending a night on the train, and sleeping through most of it.

Julene, If you're willing to share either a six-bunk or four-bunk couchette with strangers, you and your husband can be in the same compartment for a lot less money than a two-bed sleeper. Couchettes can be booked either as mixed or female only. Paying a little more for a bunk in a four-person couchette is well worth it for the extra space and comfort.

Thanks- I am thinking the price of taking the train will equal a plane + hotel- we are liking the idea of an adventure on the train!

When I went to the Night Train website initially, I was able to see pricing/booking options. Now when I go there it says "fare unavailable" and won't let me book anything- does anyone have any suggestions on how to get a reservation? We do prefer a private car for the 2 of us for sleeping, I guess that option would be the "sleeper car" referenced earlier. Do these trains also have dining cars?

When you do a search for the train make sure you set the departure time for 19:00. If its set any earlier the night train won't show up. There usually is a restaurant car and a separate bar car.

Thanks Michael, that worked!

Now my question is: Do I want to arrive into "Praha-Holesovice" or "Praha hl.n."? I'm assuming these are different stations- I'm not familiar with Prague or the stations. Is one preferable to the other to arrive into?

were flying out of brussels at about 5 pm, arriving in prague around 6:30/ My point is a night an extra night in prague is better than sleeping on a train

It does not really matter which station you use. Both have subway stations and are just few minutes from the center.
