Overnight Train - Cologne to Copenhagen

Anyone travelled on the overnight service recently - I have to make a last minute trip to Stockholm and am wondering as a girl travelling alone - am I ok to book into the 6 berth compartment rather than a sleeper? its the difference of £200 rtn. Any other gems of advise about the train journey from London to Stockholm would be most appreciated Sophie

Have you looked into discount airlines flights? London to Stockholm is a REALLY long train journey - about 2 full days and an overnight. And at last minute you'll miss any discounts on things like the Eurostar. I've done the Copenhagen-Cologne overnight a few years ago and it is a standard overnight train experience. Don't expect to sleep much but it is safe and secure. My recollection is that individuals are generally assigned same-sex compartments on overnights. Even if not, I've always met friendly or at least indifferent people on overnights, there is a conductor on board at all times and compartments have locks.

thanks for the email - i actually don't fly so train is my best option. its a 24 hour journey with the overnight so isn't too bad. i just read that the 6 seat compartments (ie not beds) are not lockable and there is no attendant - but perhaps i am mistaken...? many thanks again for your advice

Sophie, Check the www.seat61.com site. The man in seat61 is an excellent source of info on all train things to/from London. Also, go to www.bahn.de the German rail site. Somewhere on the home page, I'm pretty sure a link will pop up for City Night Line. That's the name of the set of overnight trains in and out of Germany, incl the Cologne-Copenhagen one you're interested in. That site will have lots of info on the alternative seating and sleeping arrangements available on any CNL train. And for what it's worth, I'll be on that one myself, but not till early July. Good luck and enjoy Stockholm.
