Overnight Paris to Florence or Rome

If I have a youth pass for Switzerland, France, and Italy, how will it work if I want to take the overnight train from Paris (Bercy) to Italy? Do I need a reservation and should I pay a supplement for the couchette? If so, then when should I make the reservation? I know about the Artesia train from Italy to Paris. Does it also travel from Paris to Italy in the same way? Where can I get the timetables? Your help is greatly appreciated!

It's been a long time since I took that route, I was 26 at the time and I did NOT book a couchette. (reservation required) I was really sorry I hadn't. It was a long and uncomfortable night. I traveled from Paris to Florence. Hopefully, somebody else can answer the rest of your questions.

You can get schedules on the days you want to travel at either Trenitalia or SNCF Voyages websites. You do need a reservation, and you should make reservation as early as possible. The Artesia travel both ways, but is a crap train IMHO.

Karen: You might consider taking a fast day train from Paris to Milan in 5-6 hrs. Overnight in Milan. Then the next day, all of Italy is a reasonable train ride away. It will be more comfortable, cheaper, and you'll see more.
