Overnight layover at LHR—baggage claim?

Next month I have an overnight layover at Heathrow on a single BA itinerary/ticket. I’m looking forward to trying my first daytime eastbound TransAt flight, and splurging on the Sofitel (for which I seem to be paying mostly for convenience/location.)

My question, for those with experience, is this: Will I have to, or be able to, collect and recheck my bag for the overnight? Or is it not an option? (Frankly, I’d be fine leaving it if I can, and depend on just the carry on for the night.)

If your luggage is checked through to your final destination you will not be able to get it at LHR. What you need to do is carry what ever you would need overnight in the bag(s) you carry aboard with you.

Good question. We will be doing something similar, but westbound instead, next September.

Since the Sofitel is landside in T5, I have assumed we would collect our bags (if we check them in the first place) and re-check them the next morning. But I will await the informed answers with interest.

Scudder, I have done this very thing with the overnight connection and staying at the Sofitel. (it is a splurge, but I love the convenience!)

The short answer is- if your next flight departs in less than 24 hours you can check your bags all the way through. Greater than 24 hours, you need to reclaim, recheck.

Thanks, all. I’ll be sure to pack more than my usual “lost luggage emergency underwear” in my carryon.

Carol- it was your recommendation of the Sofitel in other posts that convinced me to fall off my wallet and pay for the convenience.

The Sofitel is totally worth it. Not only for the convenience but for some of the best beds I have ever slept on. A cross-Atlantic day flight and a good night's sleep at the Sofitel is a splurge I often take now I am a little older.
