overnight boats and trains in Scandinavia

Has anyone taken the overnight ferry from Hirtshals, Denmark to Bergen, Norway? If so, is it generally pretty smooth sailing (I'll be there in July)? Is it worth it to spring for a cabin (double) or just go with "reclining seats"?
Also thinking of taking a direct overnight train from Oslo to Stockholm. For this leg, I'm going solo. Is it possible to get a sleeping berth? I have no experience with overnight travel in Europe... any tips?

Yes, I have taken it before. It's a smooth sail. And it takes 16 hours!! Yes of course you want a cabin. In a hotel, do you want to sit on a chair in their lobby from 9pm until 1pm the next day or rather have a room where you can refresh, store all your luggage safely and have nobdy else snoring or talking or listening to music on their earphones that you can still hear around you. If you book early they've got great deals for cabins. FYI personally I like the ferry routes overview on Let's Go Ferry.

If you have to be in that part of Denmark anyway, and you want to get to Bergen next, the ferry makes sense. But if you can get back to Copenhagen, a flight would make a lot more sense. SAS has good deals on regional flights. The boat to Bergen is (or so I have heard - I didn't use it myself) not especially scenic or especially opulent. The Silja boats from Stockholm to Helsinki on the other hand, are quite nice, economical, and very scenic (at least in the area near Stockholm). The overnight train we took north from Stockholm to Narvik, Norway (above the arctic circle) was the nicest one of the five we have taken in Europe. We took another back down south from Bodo to Trondheim that did not have couchettes, just seats. That was the worst of the five. I'll never spend a night sitting up again - except out of necessity on a plane.

Thanks Randy. I know it's advisable to fly when it comes to long distances and I had to make that decision in Spain last year. The guidebooks tell you to consider flying between San Sebastian and Barcelona, for instance. But I stayed on the ground, with trains and never regretted the decision. But I didn't do any overnight trains... this is something I've only done once in the USA and I hated it. And I even had a berth.
