We have read in Rick Steves books about this trip over the Alps and want to include it in our Rome to Paris trip next May, but we would be starting in Italy and continuing to France; everthing written about this trip is France to Italy. We would be traveling from Milan and up into the Valle d'Aosta to pick up the gondola that ascend to Hellbronner Point and then down to Chamonix to begin our travels in France. Cannot find much about picking up the gondolas in the Courmeyer area. Can yo reserve them? What are the crowds like in mid May whern we plant to go? Any luggage restriction (we will both have small wheely carry on bags)? Would appreciate any feedback from anyone who has tried this.
When we were in Valle d'Aosta in May 2007 (May 7,8) the gondola from Courmeyer to Chamonix was closed. We drove on to Chamonix and took the Gondola up to Mont Blanc. I don't know if the Gondoloas from the Italian side are closed every May or if they just happened to be working on them at that particular time. You could research it and find out. If no one on this site knows you could maybe post your question on the trip advisor forums.
May is usually iffy due to weather. The best time for this trip is late summer. If you want to try, check weather reports well before you go all the way Aosta.
