OT: NYC Transportation

Got great info in our trip to the EU, so I am asking for some local help. Going to NYC, family of 5. Stay just across the river in NJ or in the city for 3 days. Embassy Suites save $700 in NJ vs NYC. But then the tranport cost and time from NJ to NYC, are we really saving?
We plan on getting a NYC Metro card for in city trasport.

My advice would be to stay in the city. You should also inquire about accommodations on the Trip Advisor New York City forum. There are lots of NYC experts who could give you up to the minute advice. Enjoy NY!

Thank You!
As we did in London, Paris and Rome, pay a little more and enjoy the limited time we have in a city.

"Embassy Suites save $700 in NJ vs NYC. But then the tranport cost and time from NJ to NYC, are we really saving?" NJ Transit trains are really cheap- I doubt you would spend $700 in 3 days. At least from Newark or Hoboken, it doesn't take long to get to Manhattan by rail. At most, 20-30 minutes for Newark, probably 10 minutes from Hoboken.

Hotel is in Secaucus, about 4 miles from 42nd street in NYC. Its about a 20-30min bus ride. $4 per person each way.

You'd better check the bus schedule first. They usually only run once an hour. And they can get very crowded--especially during Rush Hour.

Have you checked hotels in Brooklyn? A few new ones have gone up near the water and are fairly accessible by subway.

Stay in Secaucus. But I'm not sure why you would take the bus? The NJ Transit Secucaucs Junction rail station has it's own exit off the turnpike (15X), has a brand new Park & Ride facility, and is only one stop away from Penn Station in Manhattan. Trains run 24 hours a day, and there are a minimum of 4 train an hour. You'll be saving a lot of money. Hotel prices in Manhattan are obscene!

If you won't have access to a car to get you too Secaucus Junction, you can take a taxi to and from; there are lots of taxis waiting around the clock. Some nearby hotels have a shuttle service.
