Orvieto to Roma train

We will be traveling on Orvieto to Rome on the Regional train on a Wednesday evening (5:22 PM) in early June and have two question; should we make reservations now or just purchase our tickets when we are in Orvieto? We will have only carryon bags (the only way to travel), will there be space available to store the bags, concerned that the train will be very full. Would first class tickets give us more room for the bags? Thanks

Mike, the compartment will probably have space for luggage (racks) at both ends, in addition to overhead bins. Some trains have space between the pairs of seats facing away from each other (you can usually get a stuffed 21-inch bag in that spot).

I'll be taking the train into Rome from Orvieto in 10 days. It's only something like 1 hr. 15 minutes. Like they said, it's a local train without reservations. Seldom is any train full in Italy except during holiday periods. Reservations are required on the faster, long distance trains like from Florence to Rome.

Hi Mike. On regional trains, there are no discounts and no reserved seats; just buy your tix when there. Bags can go in racks above the seats or wherever else you find space. First class might give you more room, but regional trains often don't have any first class cars (even though you can buy a first class tix). Enjoy your trip!

Mike, As the others have mentioned, reservations are not possible on Regionale trains. As you'll be travelling with carry-on only, you shouldn't have any trouble finding places to put your luggage. There are racks above the seats and if the train isn't too crowded, just put them on the seat beside you or the floor in front of you. Conditions on the Regionale trains tend to be a bit "informal". One IMPORTANT point to mention -- when travelling on Regionale trains, YOU MUST validate your tickets in the yellow machine, or risk a hefty fine! I saw that happen (to someone else) last year, and it wasn't cheap (about 40€ PP as I recall). I'd suggest buying your outgoing tickets when you arrive in Orvieto (since you'll be at the station anyway). I believe there's a staffed ticket office there, but if it's closed just use the automated Kiosk. Although I've never travelled the Orvieto-Rome route on a Wednesday evening at 17:22, I suspect that the passenger load will be "light". It's a short trip, so I wouldn't be too concerned about "first class" (which may not even be available). Buon Viaggio!

Thank you everyone for the posts, not having rode the regional train before I was not sure what we would encounter. We will take your advice and purchase the outbound tickets when we arrive in Orvieto.
