I've been looking on the forum and all I can find on this topic is very outdated (over 5 years).
I read that there is a bus from Tiburtina bus station to Sorrento on http://www.curreriviaggi.it that takes about 4.5 hours (numerous stops but comfortable and with luggage storage) but when I plugged in my details it gave me a price of 350 Euro! I would also need to know how to get from FCO to Tiburtina and the schedule. A forum from 2011 said there is only one bus a day at 2PM. My plane is due in at 5:30PM (if all goes well, plus add time for getting luggage and going through customs), so at least an hour after that before I can start the next leg.
I'm really trying to avoid the 3-train deal (FCO to Termini via Leonardo Express, go downstairs to get ticket, wait for and get train to Naples station, go downstairs to get ticket, wait for and get train to Sorrento), which would be a lot of time, hassle with luggage, and money. Then cab from there to my hotel.
Has anyone done this route recently that can give me the current scoop?
Personally not traveled your route, but this service gets yo directly from FCO to Naples and then you have just one additional leg to Sorrento
The bus company Marozzi runs from Tiburtina bus station to Sorrento, but their last bus leaves at 3:00 p.m. I'm not sure you have other viable options, unless you stay in Rome for one night and then take the Marozzi 7:00 a.m. bus to Sorrento. It also depends on your date of travel; Marozzi only runs two daily buses beginning June 1. Here's a link for Marozzi: https://www.marozzivt.it/home. Good luck and buon viaggio!
I took your route yesterday. I am currently in St Agnello one stop on the Circumvesuviana from Sorrento. All I can say it is pretty long especially the last leg and maybe crowded standing room only.
Thanks Jazz+Travels. Are you referring to the train route or bus route? What time of day did you take the route?
I took the train route. I arrived Rome at 14:15 and by 14:55 I was on the train to Roma Termini. I bought my ticket to Naples for the train at 16:55. I arrive at Naples around 18:00. Bought the ticket for the train Circumvesuviana to the direction of Sorrento it costs 3.90 euro cash only. It came around 18: 30. I arrived here in St Agnello about 20:00. You might consider the Campania Express from Naples if it is running at the time you want since it comes with an assigned seats and makes only 4 stops to get to Sorrento.
All high-tourism location questions are better answered with the month of the year and day of the week of travel. You need to read more about the Circumvesuviana and download a schedule because it is one of the main reasons for sleeping in Sorrento. You can find such posts every week on this board. (Search box and then select Forum posts.) The Frecciarossa service to Naples is much cheaper three months in advance (one of the 3-train options), but not changeable or refundable if your plane is late. We even spent the night in NAPLES because our London-Naples flight was scheduled so late. Can you afford a car service from Naples? If not, learn about how artistic and historic Naples is, and spend a night there.
The three train option may be the most frequently used option, and pretty easy. The problem here is your flight time. Sorrento is not as isolated as Positano. But that's one reason people want to go there. Do you know that Sorrento is not known for beaches?
