One-way train trip cost in Germany

2 seniors want to make a one-way train trip in Germany(approx 3 hr-2 connections, 1 via Frankfurt). Is it cheaper to buy on-line or when we get there?

It depends on what you mean by buying "online". If you mean online from a US reseller like RailEurope, never. If you are talking about online tickets from the Bahn, it will almost always be cheaper. The Bahn offers advance purchase tickets online for less than the price of standard, over-the-counter tickets. RailEurope takes the standard, over-the-counter tickets and marks the up from there.

But, give us a hint. Where are you going?

Thanks for the advice re on-line sites. We are going from just south of Frankfurt, Ingelheim, to north, Witzenhausen. Neither are big cities and we have to connect through Frankfort. I checked one on-line site and the prices varied a lot depending on time of day and length of trip. I will look for the Bahn site.

Going from Ingelheim to Witzenhausen is 3½ to 5 hours depending on the class of service.

The fastest route uses express trains and can have fares as low as €29, €49 for two people, maybe more.

Regional trains take about an hour longer, but on weekend days, with a Schönes-Wochenende-Ticket will cost €37.

On a weekday, you can use a €4,70 pP one way ticket from Ingelheim to Mainz, and a Hessen-Ticket, for €31, from there to Witzenhausen.

You have to be careful around Kassel, because some routes to Witzenhausen go out of Hessen into Neidersachsen, and might incur extra fares.
