Omaha-Chicago/Chicago-Amsterdam 1 hour layover

I am flying with 5 adults from Omaha, Nebraska to Chicago O’Hare, then Chicago to Amsterdam on September 21.

We only have a one-hour layover . . . Will that be enough time??? Do we go through security again in Chicago? Passport control and customs? Arrive Chicago at 4:54 pm - will lines be horrendous at that hour?

Thank you for any and all advice!!!

are you changing airlines? What airline are you flying to Amsterdam? Are you checking your luggage thru at Omaha?

Pleae give us more info, then I might be able to give you more info. 4:54 is not a bad time in the airport.

Assuming it is one ticket and you check in at Omaha through to Amsterdam. You stay behind security so it is just a matter of walking from one gate to the next. If the airline booked it they view it as adequate. There should be no lines. There is no passport control or customs when leaving the US. It will be tight so don't stop for dinner.

Do you know if you are changing terminals? That would be the biggest factor. Checked luggage?

You will make it as long as the flight from Omaha leaves on time.
Both of your flights to Chicago to Amsterdam on United arrive and depart from the same Terminal 1. You have to just go from one gate to another not security again; the only lines will be when you get off the plane and when you get on the next plane boarding.

yep, you'll be in terminal 1. Just look at the boards and find the right gate to fly to Amsterdam. Enjoy Chicago for a bit. And have a great time in Amsterdam.

Presumably its UA flt 2332 and 909? Since they sell it that way it should work.

Passport control and customs will happen in AMS

You likely will have your passport checked as you board in ORD to make sure you have a valid passport and the airline is not stuck with the bill to fly you back.

You bought your tickets and United is under contract to get you to Amsterdam. The question will be when. It will come down to weather and equipment and factors beyond your control. Breath deep and don't sweat what is beyond your control.

If you were on today's (03 Sep 2018) UA 2332, even a three hour layover wouldn't work unless your outbound to Amsterdam was similarly three hours late.

UA 2332 03 Sep 2018
Departed OMA at 05:54PM CDT (2 hours 38 minutes late)
Arrived ORD Gate B17 07:57PM CDT (3 hours 3 minutes late)

UA 909 03 Sep 2018
Departed ORD 07:00PM CDT (55 minutes late)

My usual assumption is that a late arrive to ORD is often matched by a late departure. Today's connection was not so lucky.

Saw on news tonight ORD was messed up as the terminal buildings were flooding due to the heavy rain

O'Hare had a lot of delays today. Tons of storms in the area for a good chunk of the afternoon.

Yes, United/Lufthansa has flights to Munich, and Frankfurt later in the day from Terminal 1. Those will have connecting flights to Amsterdam.

Download the united ap. It should give you the gate you'll need to go to. Let the flight attendants know you have a tight connection to an European flight. The worse scenario would be United would put you on another star alliance carrier in Term 5 (international terminal) That would require you to take the people mover to that terminal and go thru security. You have a rather early flight to Europe out of Chicago. There are many flights out until late evening. We have a 9:00 PM flight to Dublin next week. On your flight to Amsterdam from Chicago United KNOWS you are coming off the Omaha flight. So don't stress, but don't dilly dally to get to the gate.

Additionally, if you come into a gate on B concourse (smaller aircraft) you may probably need to go to the C concourse (All still in terminal 1) C concourse is remote, so you must head to the escalators and go underground on the moving walkway to head to the C concourse. Again. don't worry, but you won't have a lot of time. I wouldn't make a potty break. Just go the plane as soon as you get checked in. (well, I've done this at Heathrow, they were holding our plane at the time....)

RE: Flying cheapest economy so I HAVE to check my bag

Is you Omaha/Chicago flight what United tickets as "Basic Economy" where cbin baggage is limited to "one persional item" and does not allow a full size carryon? It appears that United's "Basis Economy" also does not allow complementary seat assignments nor group/family seating unless you purchase advance seat assignments.

If you are limited to the one personal item, you should be able to run faster. But try to pack all of your essentials (eg medications) and a change of at least fresh socks and undergarmets.

If your group did not advance purchase seat assignments (hopefully forward near the egress door), don't wait for each other. Sprint for the departing flight with the first to arrive at the C gate to let the gate personnel know that they are four more close behind in the event that the aircraft is loading and close to door closure time.

That's too bad as your bag is likely not make it to AMS with you unless you are very lucky. Pack a few days' worth of clothing with you in your carry on just in case. Flights can close 30-45 minutes before departure so you really don't have that 1 hour layover.

No to security lines at ORD. Not sure why you mention customs as you'll be flying between Nebraska and Illinois; nobody will check to see if you have anything to declare when you travel from state to state. :-) FYI, customs in AMS will be a walk through. You won't go through security again at ORD. As for "passport control", when you board your AMS flight, the gate agent might ask to see your passport before you enter the jetway.
