Odd taxi situations

I’ve had 2 odd taxi situations in a week and just thought I’d throw them out there so folks might not be surprised if something similar happens to them.

  1. The 1st strange event was in Colmar. I had the hotel book me a cab to the station the night before departure. I was downstairs early (shocked, right?) and the lady at the desk asked me if it was OK if the guy picked me up early. I said sure. Then she said “it is a black car driven by a black man. It is a car they use to take people to the hospital so he doesn’t have a meter”. Then he arrives and there is another customer in the cab. He says. If you don’t mind, I will drop you at the station and then take her where she needs to go. I will charge you 13 Euro but I don’t have a meter so it is a flat rate. Uh, ok. I’d found a cab on arrival and it was 11E to the hotel so 13 was fine. The other passenger was a business woman and on her phone the whole time. She barely even glanced at me so maybe this happens all the time.

  2. Today I arrived in Ghent and when I got to the taxi bay there was just one taxi! He took my bag then there were 2 other couples who’d arrived after me waiting so he asked if he could check with them to see where they were going and possibly take all of us. I said fine. One of the other couples was apparently going in the same direction so we combined. They turned out to be from California, had just finished a Gate 1 cruise and were getting ready to start another tour with them. Then the taxi driver who spoke excellent English asked about the tour companies, lol. He dropped me first and charged me 9.70E which was fair.

I wonder if a lot of drivers quit the business during the pandemic? Quite odd to have 2 strange taxi situations in a week!! Both of these locations are busy with tourists so it’s not like I’m visiting somewhere that a tourist wouldn’t be expected to go.

I didn’t mind sharing the cab and was pretty entertained by the couple today. Based on the other thread regarding tour mates, I’d probably enjoy being on a tour with them, lol!!

Well, this is far from where you, but my daughter said that taxis in Dubai were hard to come by for quite a while soon after quarantine times. Back to normal now, though. And my driver in Amman told me a lot of people/drivers lost their cars during quarantine - no income, couldn’t make payments. But I don’t know that affected regular taxis or not.

You know how to have fun in all situations, though! 🤣🤣

Situation 1 is not that unusual in a French small town (and Colmar is a small town). The hotel was probably unable to book one of the few regular taxis and booked a "taxi conventionné" instead, which is a taxi that is specifically authorized to take patients to/from hospitals and can get refunded by medical insurance.

The first situation isn't surprising to me. The French healthcare system contracts with drivers, taxis and ambulances, to take patients to and from hospital appointments. It's part of the healthcare system. In a small market like Colmar, drivers and taxis are flexible.

Thanks! The guy on the desk in Colmar the afternoon before had to call 3 or 4 numbers before he could book anyone.

And yes, TravelMom, enjoying it all!!

Interesting stories, thanks for sharing.

There are so many tips/warnings about only using official taxis and avoiding 'gypsy cabs' but my overall experience with them has been positive, and in some cases better. Sometimes the hotel or the restaurant has drivers they work with and promote, and those can be nicer than the standard/official taxi company.

One comparison -- in Beijing the freelance/unofficial taxis were in bad shape (held together with twine and spackle) but the drivers were savvy while the official taxis were clean but the drivers were not so bright. A Taiwanese colleague remarked that those guys are driving for a taxi company for a reason (meaning they can't get other work).

I really was expecting something more unusual. Sharing a cab is very common both in the US and Europe. From many travel sites we have come to expect a pickpocket around every corner and taxi drivers constantly trying a scam. It good to be aware and alert but every situation is not a scam.

Wow, Pam, two interesting stories for sure!
The first one I find a bit more odd; but then again, I stayed up late last night watching two Alfred Hitchcock movies. LOL!
You know, your #1 entry is exactly the way one of his movies would begin.........
"The Lady Vanishes" is one of the ones I watched last night. :O
Your cab ride #2 seems pretty normal to me. I have shared cabs to the airport with strangers both in London and in NYC.
I hope you're having a great time on your trip.

I was thinking similar to Rebecca. For the first one you mentioned where the car is used to take people to the hospital, I was picturing your ride being in the back on a gurney! LOL! I guess that’s still better than getting a ride in the vehicle that is used for the final ride from the hospital! Glad they all ended well!

We usually just take local transportation, but there is a taxi ride to the Rome airport that we will never forget - whew! Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride!

Hahaha…Jean! We had Mr Toad’s wild ride from the airport the first time in Rome!

To clarify…I didn’t feel scammed in either instance. I just thought the lack of taxis was unusual. I definitely felt lucky to get the “last” cab yesterday and in retrospect the “last” cab when I arrived in Colmar. Yep, I’d have waited or figured out public transport or < gasp > walked, lol.

And Rebecca!!! 😁😁😬

I’ve never lived on a cab or public transport environment I guess I was not ready for that to happen. Just surprised, lol.
