Does anyone know if the eurorail is available to and from each of these locations? I am trying to find the simplest and quickest way FROM Oberammergau TO Fussen. Then several days later, I will want to travel FROM Fussen TO Milan. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :-)
In the first place, the Eurail is not a rail company, Eurail doesn't run trains. It is a consortium of European National railroads banded together to sell passes valid on the various national rail lines. German, Swiss, and Italian Rail all participate, so, yes, a Eurail pass could be valid to and from all those locations.
You can go from Oberammergau to Füssen via rail, but it is not the most direct or convenient way to go. You either have to go from Oberammergau to Munich and then to Füssen, or from Oberammergau to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, then via the Ausserfernbahn by way of Reutte to Kempten and then to Füssen via Biessenhofen.
There are faster way, like by direct bus (1hr 20m) via Wieskirche, or by bus from Oberammergau to Garmish, then by rail to Reutte or Pfronten, and then by bus to Füssen, but I do not believe that the bus routes are covered by a Eurail pass. It would probably be better to leave this day off of your pass and buy p2p tickets.
Again, from Füssen to Milan is not very direct (there are mountains in the way). Your best bet is to go from Füssen to Zürich, then via the Gotthardbahn and Lugano to Milan. Alternately, you could use the bus to go to Pfronten, Reutte, or Garmisch, then by train via Innsbruck and Verona to Milan.
Thank you so much for all that information! As you probably can tell, I am brand new to Europe and am not familiar with all the correct terms for the transportation system - so thankyou for the Cliff notes version of that! :-) I do appreciate the help and if anyone else has suggestions, I'd like those too. Have a great day!
Eurail has a website at www.eurail.com (who would have quessed?). A lot of information can be found on the site under FAQ. First question under FAQ is "What is Eurail?" (Second question is "What is Eurorail?).
The best place to get schedules for trains (and some buses) all over Europe is on the German Rail query page.
