My ultimate destination is to Bath. The cheapest airline I keep finding is on Aer Lingus but they charge highway robbery for just one checked bag. Is there another country anyone knows of to fly into and out of to make this trip less expensive? I will be traveling from the 13th to the 21st of next month. It pains me to think that 3yrs ago it was $500 to fly straight to Heathrow.
We flew Aer Lingus just one month ago and did not pay anything for the first checked bag. Perhaps they charge for short regional flights within Europe. But if your luggage is checked all the way through to England with only a short stopover in Dublin, the bags should be treated as a long-haul bag and free.
I flew Aer Lingus in June 2012 from Boston to Brussels with a layover in Dublin. I was not charged for checking a bag.
According to the Aer Lingus website, they don't charge for the first checked bag on long haul flights. www.aerlingus.com/help/help/feesfares/ "Longhaul Baggage fees (to/from USA)
Economy Class - Low Fare - 2nd and subsequent bag weighing up to 23kgs (50lbs) will be charged."
Thanks I was wondering about that. I would have to do a mulit-trip flight arrangement then. Meaning I would change planes, but my bags would get sent on to England. I am finding cheap flights to Dublin on United Airlines but they don't offer cheap airfare from Dublin to England. I am thinking that I will have to book the trips seperately, therefore the worry about paying for baggage fees. Thanks guy for answering. I would still appreciate any input to help with my planning.
Would it be less expensive if the Ireland-England leg of your trip were by boat?
Not sure if it would be cheaper, but how about flying into Manchester or Bristol and then train to Bath?
I think you can get a combined boat/rail ticket from Dublin to Bath much cheaper than separate tickets if you decide to go that route.
I am trying to cut out travel time also, but I will check out the boat/rail combined ticket. Flying into Bristol from NY is more expensive than flying into London. It seem Dublin is the way to go and even with the baggage fee it will be cheaper than flying straight thru to London. Well at least when I checked last Wednesday. A Has anyone seen airfare prices to the UK dropping since the end of the Olympics?
Well, it seems that airfare is finally dropping. So instead of flying into Dublin and having to wrangle with baggage fees for about $700. I can fly directly into London for $15 dollars more. It is hurting me to pay this much but so much better than $1000.
