We are flying in to Prague and then driving to Dusseldorf the next day to catch a river cruise. Is there a site or does anyone know how to tell how many toll booths there are on the Czech portion of our trip? Since they dont' use euros, I'm wanting to make sure we have enough local currency to get us through to Germany. Thanks in advance!
Check Via Michelin routing, they gave quite accurate information on toll prices and where you should pay them.
There are NO toll booths at all. You need to buy a toll sticker which you get at every gas station in the Czech Republic. The 10-days one is the cheapest and it's €10.50 (eqv.). You can buy it using a credit card. You only need such a toll sticker if you want to take and of the D-routes! On those routes you may find highway patrol standing on the side checking out cars with goggles. If they can't find a toll sticker they'll follow you and stop you. On the back side of the sticker it shows which corner of the windscreen it must be put at. So on the Prague to Düsseldorf trip you need it for D5 from the peripherie of the Czech capital to Rozvadov. If you have the time take any exit from the freeway after you passed the Pilsen/Plzen region - not so much for the beer but to refill your car. The tank won't be empty by then but gas and Diesel are cheaper in the CZ Rep than in Germany. Gas stations at freeway rest areas are much more expensive than the first one you'll find off the freeway. While there is an official speed limit of 130 km/h on D5 you will see that even locals drive much faster. It's announced that at some stage that speed limit will be uplifted to 160 km/h (which is 100 mph). As soon as you pass the border into Germany there is no speed limit until the Nuremberg area.
