Not really CLEAR

how this will play out:

(CNN) Clear is a service that lets people skip the security line at airports with nothing but a biometric scan and $189. Some California lawmakers want to make changes to it in the state, saying it separates travelers into haves and have-nots.

California lawmakers voted 8-4 to move a bill out of the Senate Transportation Committee that would create a moratorium on Clear’s expansion at state airports. The bill has to be approved by the full California Senate and Assembly and signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom to become law ...

Clear offers expedited service at nine airports in California. About 10% of California travelers are Clear members, according to a legislative analysis of the bill.

Silly. I got Clear for free for a few years through Delta. Didn't find it to be terribly compelling, partially because my home airport did not have it at the time. My home airport has it now, but it's still not of enough value to pay for it.

In California, maybe it is worth it. Seems like a bit of government overreach.

People who can afford to travel, and to pay airfare, are already “haves.” Some “haves” are better off than others, but nobody at an airport is a true “have-not.” That is, unless Security has taken away a possession because it didn’t meet safety standards.

What would come next? Eliminating special airport lounges for high-end flyers?

This is how Clear operates at our medium sized(?) airport. There are 3 lines that branch off of one, those without any special clearance, those with TSA-Pre and Clear. It always surprises me to see at least 5 employees standing at the Clear line to assist people and usher them to the front of the TSA-Pre line where we have 1 screener. There are usually two other Clear employees at a different location prior to these lines, trying to get people to sign up. It’s very employee heavy and handholding looking. I’m not sure how it fits in with TSA, which already has programs in place, but the extra Clear money at our airport buys you several greeters to escort you to the front of the government lines?

Clear is the biggest waste of money and I get it for free. you know it’s bad when free is too much to pay

We timed it several times. He doesn’t have clear, I do. . We both have pre-check. Guess who is always waiting on the other side of security? ( It’s not the person who used the clear pre-check option)

And now they tell me that because I travel a lot, the TSA is going to require that they check my ID every time. Excuse me what was the purpose of this useless service? for me to stand in a longer line? oh, I think I’ll pass. I hope this company goes out of business.

But I worked in California for seven years and commuted and for seven years they would ask me why I didn’t want to move. And legislative action like this was one of the top reasons. Let’s not fix important things. Let’s focus on stupid stuff so we can look stupid.

Clear works great at SEA, my home airport. I love it! As for haves and have not, sheesh! Don't get me started on that. Clear itself though has been a huge timesaver for me, and I wouldn't go without.

CLEAR is a feature at SFO. If one is willing to pay for this piece of luxury, it's available. I see the validity put forth by its opponents.

Even if CLEAR in SFO were free, I would not be interested.
