Norweigen Air Shuttle/Norweigen Long Haul

This discount airline has come up on a few fare searches, via Fort Lauderdale Airport (connecting with Spirit Airlines). Any positive or negative experiences with Norweigen (or its interaction with Spirit at FLL) to report? Fares look really good but I generally cant stand Spirit (unless I can get the Big Wide Seat) and have seem some negatives about Norweigen's international service. Thanks in advance

I can't speak to Spirit or Florida but I flew Norwegian from Oakland CA to Europe and back last Fall. I was very pleased.
From CA they fly the Boing 787 with seats in the 3-3-3 configuration. I was "steerage" and had enough legroom to be comfortable (unlike my last, and I mean LAST, United flights.)
I had paid the $100 upgrade for seat assignment, meals, and baggage check. For my upcoming flights next month I opted to pay only for seat assignment. You can buy sandwiches, drinks, and snacks onboard for a reasonable price and the prepared meals were pretty mediocre. And I will keep the weight of my bag under 22.6 pounds, easier to do in Spring than in winter.
They have video screens for each seat but you'll need your own earbuds (or pay $5 for theirs). The movies were several years old but I saw a couple I had missed on initial release.
There is plenty of overhead storage for carry-on bags and almost everyone did carry on.
There was no wifi on the long haul but they do offer it on the connecting flights within Europe. (Those planes are 737's.)
It is a budget carrier and their online and phone customer service is poor. However, the cabin attendants were friendly and helpful.
Hope this helps.

We flew long haul direct NYC-London & Paris-NYC this past September. I thought it was a pleasant trip. We paid upfront at time of booking for checked bag, seat selection & food (which was still cheaper then other airlines). Both flights were full. The head room was bigger then other planes I've been on. The ambient lighting to reflect day/night was good. We had center & side seating. I was stuck in the middle each trip. If I had to do it again I'd pick center seats over side seats. I felt more squished sitting in the mid flexible on side of plane. Food was fine, typical airplane meals. We wouldn't hesitate using them again for long haul flights.

Norwegian Air is a perfectly good and reasonably priced option, but we just flew Norweigan from JFK to CDG and here are some observations:

  1. Flight departure times. Our flight from JFK to Paris left at midnight. Coming home it was 7:30 pm which meant we got into JFK at 11:30 pm and then had to stay the night at a hotel before catching another plane home in the morning. I do not think the time wouldn't be an issue if you don't have a connecting flight.

  2. Speaking of connecting flights... If your connecting flight is delayed, you have the extra stressor of catching a Norweigan Air flight. In our case, all the flights to JFK were grounded for two hours because of runway construction. The result was that our time to check in at Norweigan was pretty tight. Norweigan has no code sharing airlines. If you fly on Delta, for example, they will rebook you if you miss a flight.

  3. Food was pretty bad on the flight. That's not a fatal flaw. Just be aware.

  4. They are strict about the weight of your carryons. No kidding.

Good news:

  1. The planes were comfortable and clean.

  2. Everything worked, including the USB port.

  3. The attendants were very pleasant.

  4. Everything was on time.

  5. The prices are LOW!

Would we fly Norweigan again? Yes indeed, if we had a direct flight.

Hi. Have heard good things about Norwegian, as long as you keep in mind you will pay extra for some things that are free on most transatlantic carriers.

Have heard HORRIBLE things about Spirit. When I'm searching for flights, the first thing I do is click on 'don't show me Spirit'. Have heard several reports of horrible customer service, and also canceled flights at the last minute where they tell you 'oh, sorry, the next flight we have an open seat on is x days from now'. I personally know people this has happened to, where Spirit shows no interest in helping with a plan b.

You will need to ask the airlines about switching from Spirit to Norwegian. My guess is that there is no interaction whatsoever. That would mean collecting baggage, going through security and checking in with the second airline to get a boarding pass etc. Just a guess -- but the majority of budget airlines offer no connections.

@ SharYn...Thanks for the useful info on Norwegian Air flying out of Oakland. It all sounds very positive using Norwegian as long it is a direct flight going over I'm used to the straight 11 hr flight. If Norwegian does that, then it is a highly possible option. Good to have another option, even better if the cost is much less. When I fly from SFO to Paris CDG, it's either United or Air France; if it's to FRA, then it's either United or Lufthansa. Going to London, it's usually Br. Airways.
