Norway: Balestrand to Gudvangen to Aurland or Flam

I read in Rick's book about taking a boat from Balestrand to a midpoint and going on to Gudvangen. I'll be there end of July. Does anyone know if it is possible (on a Monday) to take a boat (preferably late morning like the 11:50) to Gudvangen and then on to Aurland (or Flam) with the idea of then sleeping in Aurland or Flam? Or would I have to go Balestrand to Flam (or Aurland) first, then catch a round trip ferry to Gudvangen? If so, if I arrive in Flam at 13:25 is that too late to go to Gudvangen by ferry and come back again?

Yes, you can take a boat from Balestrand, transfer mid-fjord, and arrive in Gudvangen. We did that a couple of years ago. But why make the transfer if your goal is to get to Aurland or Flam. Just stay on the boat. Or is it your goal to visit Gudvangen (precious little to see/do there) and then move on to Aurland or Flam? You can see schedules at http://www.fjord1.no/eng/ferry. Click on the ferry, boat, or bus timetables at the bottom of the page. Good luck and have a great trip.

Thanks for the reply! My goal would be to go down the Naerfjord, not to see Gudvangen.
I'm now trying to see if it's possible to do this on the way to Balestrand instead. I would be coming from Bergen on the 10:30 train, then doing the nutshell thing in reverse... get off at Voss, bus to Gudvangen. Ferry to Aurland and hope I can catch the 15:30 ferry our of Flam going to Balestrand. I would miss it if I went all the way to Flam (arrives 15:30) but I'm hoping that if I get off at Aurland, I can be there before the Flam-Balestrand express boat gets there. (will it stop for me in Aurland if I'm on the dock? Rick says it only stops in Aurland if someone on the boat wants to get off). Guess I ought to post this question separately.

Don, I'd say you are to the point where a telephone call directly to Fjord1 would be very worthwhile. I did this back a couple years ago when we did NinN. They'll speak English and you'll be able to get your questions answered definitively for only a couple bucks. Watch the time difference if you call. Happy travels.
