I am trying to figure out the best way to get from Normandy (Caen, Cherbourg or another city) to Bath, England. Through Portsmouth, I guess (don't know), and then on to Bath by bus. Does anyone know how I should do this? Overnight ferry is fine, if there is such a thing. Renting a car in our port of entry in England is a possibility, as well.

There are actually through trains from Portsmouth to Bath roughly every hour, operated by First Great Western. They are cross-country and not incredibly fast - expect about a two hour trip.

Brittany Ferries has overnight service from Caen to Portsmouth. Depart at 23:00 and arrive at 07:30. If you book around 60 days in advance at www.eastcoast.co.uk, a train ticket from Portsmouth to Bath Spa will cost less than a bus ticket. And the train is faster.
