Non TGV train travel in France

I am traveling from Paris to Brive la Gaillard. Can I purchase the tickets in the US or do I have to wait until I am in France. Also, will I need a reservation? My family and I will be in Paris 2 days before we need to travel to Brive.

You need a reservation for CORAIL and CORAIL Téoz trains as well (which is the train type for this route). You can choose to buy your tickets/reservations on arrival in France (at any train station) or to buy them through the the French railway site: Voyages-sncf.com, using a credit card. If you use the website, you should know that it's in French language and you have to choose to pick up your tickets in France (tickets are not shipped to the US). On the website, after reserving and paying for your tickets with a credit card, you pick up the ticket at a ticket window at any train station in France upon arrival. You can't pick them up using the automated kiosks with a foreign credit card.

"You need a reservation for CORAIL and CORAIL Téoz"

No, NOT for Corail, but yes for Corail Téoz.
Actually, today, there are not so many Corail-trains, they have changed in "TER 200". Lol.

  • So, you'll need a reservation for:
TGV, Corail Téoz, Corail Lunea (night train), Special trains (Eurostar, Thalys, Artesia, Elypsos...)

  • You don't need a reservation, but you can make one if you like:
    Corail, Corail intercités.

  • You can't reservate:
    TER, TER 200.
