No need to show boarding pass at TSA?

I’ve departed from 2 US airports in the past week and didn’t have to show a boarding pass when going through security. These were domestic flights. Is this new? How does TSA know I’m legitimately going to fly?

It depends. I’m flying this morning and had to show my boarding pass at the tsa precheck line. The agent said it all depends on what machine is there. I’ve been flying every week between the same two cities and this is the first time I had to show my boarding pass. Not a big deal but it threw me off.

Could be, if they have the right reader, you ID indicates whether you have checked into a flight or not. Much like facial recognition at some airports, at boarding an international flight, no need to look at the passport, the facial recognition clears you...or doesn't.

Thanks for the responses. Both airports are on the list on the TSA website. We passed through so quickly it seemed like there was hardly enough time to verify us.

Welcome to the future! I departed overseas from Dallas Fort Worth recently and at the gate didn't even have to show my boarding pass or my passport to anyone! They used a biometric scanner to scan each passenger's face before boarding the plane. That was all that was used to identity the passengers. I'm sure this will become standard everywhere in the near future.

When I boarded a flight to Paris from JFK and just had to stare into a TV screen, it did not make me feel secure.

Gee, if only the security screening could be linked to the rest of the computerized identification. Like, knowing that the person with that specific facial structure also happens to have artificial joints, so the metallic screening alarm that suggests a manual full-body probe is necessary could prevent such an invasive search.

Maybe 3 oz. container limits in a quart Ziploc bag are a permanent situation, maybe that could change, too. But no boarding pass, and even no passport? That’s surprising.

Chicago has been using this new technology on some international flights. Just facial scanning at the gate before boarding - no need to re-scan a passport or boarding pass at the gate. However, this is not on all international flights. I must admit it is a little strange. You just step up individually and have your face scanned.

In what way? Don't get it.

I think it depends on the airport - I just flew from MSP to BDL and did not have to show my boarding pass at either airport. At MSP, the TSA person was obviously getting frustrating by the number of people who tried to show their boarding pass and kept waving it away, so it must be a new policy.

Flew out of Chicago last weekend no need to show it. Flew back from Raleigh no need to show it.

to answer Paul's question, I do not look much like that person in my passport nor on my Global Entry card. So if that's the criteria they are using, I'm not confident.

if somehow it's more complicated and uses things like distance between my pupils or type of nose hair that is verifiable, I might feel a little better. What's wrong with fingerprints, those were the standard for the longest time. Even my gym used to use that for entry ID.

Maybe we just need a chip implanted like we do for pets. Of course, it would have to be "non-transferable", perhaps exploding on removal like those dye-filled tags on pricey clothing. We aren't far from this it seems!

Ahh, but that is the magic of facial recognition though, you think your looks have changed, but the biometric points that the algorithm looks for do not. You can try to change your appearance, get older, shave your head, it will still recognize you.
