No dining car/bistro on EuroNight trains ???

My wife and I will be taking 3 night trains on our 37 day trip. The latter two are Ellipsos trenhotels which have dining cars for seated dinner and breakfast. Our first night train, however, EuroNight 235 from Vienna to Roma doesn't seem to have a bordrestaurant or bordbistro. (Reading on "Seat 61" about the Cologne to Vienna Euronight, it appears that train doesn't have a dining option either).

Does anyone familiar with the standard EuroNight trains have any idea why they don't have dining options? Seat 61 suggests taking a picnic and bottle of wine on board.

Our train departs from Vienna at 19:30. We could always eat dinner before we get on the train, but that makes for a seemingly longer train ride.

Our night train from AMS to Poznan also had no dining options. It left at 1900 and arrived at 0715. The attendant brought us coffee and some prepackaged rolls in the morning that didn't do anything for our appetite. Bring your food on-board with you.

it is true. have taken the night trains from munich to rome and amsterdam to genoa with only snacks and beer. could be worse. as stated the night train from barcelona to granada has a full five star meal. have fun, be safe.

Do like the Europeans and pack a picnic lunch.

There is / was a grocery store and bakery in both major Vienna train stations...

That's exactly what I needed to hear (re: grocery store and bakery). I don't mind picnicking at all (esp love the cost savings).

Looks like we have a plan. (As long as Meidling is one of the "two main railway stations" - I thought West and Sud were the main stations - I realize Sud is closed for renovations, but you didn't specify).

Thanks!

In looking at the GoogleMaps and Wikipedia pages for Mediling, the station looks pretty bare (it's an outdoors station). I think I better find food near the hotel to take with us.

I was at Meidling in March and it is a pretty large train station with lots going on - both above ground in the surrounding environs and in the train station.

I'm not sure of where you are staying in Vienna prior to leaving, but if you are near the Opera House then you'll likely take the train from the Karlsplatz station to Meidling. If so, there is a huge underground mall - complete with food shops - at Karlsplatz. There are also grocery stores in the area where you can stock up non-perishables (chips, cookies, wine, etc) in advance and then scoop up a sandwich or something right before boarding the night train.
