Night Trains - one pass day or two?

I've heard two different answers to this question - some say that one day is used only if the train departs after 7pm. I've also heard that, no matter what time a night train leaves, if it's classified as a night train it will only take one day off your rail pass. Specifically, I'm looking at the night train from Amsterdam to Vienna, which leaves at 5pm. Thanks in advance!

The first answer is true (see "7 p.m. rule"). You can only use just one day of a railpass for a night train if it leaves after 7:00 PM.

You have two options:

1) Book the night train separately (just a seat) to Duesseldorf, which it leaves after 7, and book the overnight accommodations separately from there with the railpass, or
2) Just book the entire trip, Amsterdam to Vienna as a point-point ticket. You can often get these fares cheap, as a SparNight fare. Book online at www.citynightline.ch.
