Night Train Venice to Budapest

Hello - We are trying to figure out if we'll take a night train from Venice to Budapest or fly. The flight is a bit over $200 and rising (of course Wizz Air doesn't fly the date we are planning to go to Budapest).

I looked at Trenitalia's website for 2 months from now since I can't see the date in May we need. It looks like the type of train has changed since the last time I looked (before the updates December 14) and I think there are now deluxe cabins if I'm reading it correctly.

If so, with the hotel, flight and transportation to and from the night train would be cheaper even with the deluxe cabins.

Can anyone check what I see on the Trenitalia website? Also, has anyone actually taken a night train on this route? I know it goes through Slovenia and Croatia (so we'd need tickets for those portions as well) but I can't find much about this particular route. We've done the Prague to Basel night train and loved it (and are doing it again) so it's not a question of doing a night train but a question of only taking one if we have deluxe cabins with shower/toilet.

Thanks!!

I can't find any reference to deluxe cabins with shower/toilet on the Trenitalia site, but there definitely are two-bed sleepers on this train. This is a direct night train so you will only need to buy one ticket for your entire journey. The fares are shown on the Trenitalia site. The standard fare for a bed in a two-bed compartment is €105.

To see the route, including intermediate stops, go to the Trenitalia site, enter a date for which you can get timetables, click on "Details," and then click on the train number. You can do the same on the German Rail site, www.bahn.de.

Thanks Tim!

I have a Eurail pass that only covers Italy so I know I'll need to buy the remaining portion of the ticket and the supplement but even using the RailPass pages it's difficult to understand what that will be. (The sheet doesn't include the estimate on the Zagreb to Budapest leg.)

On the Trenitalia website when I got the travel options page (after putting in Venice to Budapest) I selected "Details" and then "Buy" and got the page where I can check the "Services Preferences" - within "Seats descriptions" it only used to have listed in the drop-down: Mandatory seat in 2nd class, c4 couchette and c6 couchette. Now it has quite a list of options and one being "Vagone letto deluxe doppio" - which I think (I think) is roughly "wagon deluxe double".

I tried doing a fare check on some of those categories that are listed in Italian (like "excelsior doppio" and "vagone letto deluxe doppio"), but the site said that the price wouldn't be shown until placing a reservation.

I suggest you call the experts at BETS for free and friendly advice. They should be able to tell you how much you will have to pay for the portions outside of Italy and how much the sleeping accommodations supplement will be.

Thanks so much! I hadn't heard of BETS before but I will go ahead and contact them.
