Night train - use of railpass single day or two?

I'm considering taking the night train in May from Barcelona to Granada. I realize night trains book up, so I'm hoping to book soon. I'm trying to determine how many days of RailEurope trainpass I need to buy - does anyone know if overnight trains use one railpass day, or two days?

IF your train leaves at 7 pm or later, it only counts as one day....the day you arrive in Granada. You will also have to make a reservation and pay a supplement for any accommodations you want. Be aware that allocations for rail pass holders are extremely limited. At this late date, you may not be able to find any spots for passholders...check with RailEurope, Euraide, or other similar agency to see if they can even book you. You could always take the daytime train. If you haven't purchased a pass, check your planned itinerary at renfe.es to see if you can get tickets that way, or consider flying via clickair.

Thanks, Norm. The train leaves Barcelona at 9:30 PM and arrives the next day in Granada at 8:40 AM, so I think based on what you are saying, it would be one day of railpass. When I enter the dates on rail europe and check the "I have a railpass" box, it gives me the option to book 2nd class (T4 couchette) for $53. I assume this means that I'd be using my railpass day and would be all set with a reservation. Is this a bad assumption to make, or would this not guarantee a reservation and sleeper? Thanks!

Just be careful, because if you take a regular train to catch the night train, that train uses another day of the pass, whether it is before or after 7 o'clock.

I think the term "reservation", as it applies to a night train, is misleading. What you are paying is a "surcharge" for the accommodation, which is being reserved for you.

The Barcelona-Granada night train is one continuous journey, so the 7 o'clock rule applies. The term "reservation" is necessary here, since you simply can't jump on board with a Eurail pass and take a seat, even if you plan to stay sitting up all night.
