Planning to take a night train from Lucerne to Rome late September(4adults, 2 kids) is it safe? I've heard otherwise. Is it worth it to reserve a couchette?

I can't comment on your particular route, but IMO night trains are certainly safe if you book a couchette. The door locks from the inside so your luggage will be secure. And you'll certainly sleep better in a bunk than you would in a reclining seat.
