The best train timetables for virtually all of Europe are at www.bahn.de. Click on the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner for English. After you get summary timetables for Venezia Santa Lucia-Monterosso, click on "Details for all" to see the connecting points. You will find that while it is possible to travel overnight on this route, there will be several changes. Even if a particular leg is on a night train that has sleeping accommodations, you won't be able to lie down very long. In short, you won't get any sleep. IMO, you'll be better off traveling during the day on this route.

At best, the train journey from Venice to the CT require 6.0-7.0hrs and 1 or more train changes - usually more. No way around this as the CT is a bit out of the way. Tim is correct that you can get runs in the night but they are only segments of the journey and not the entire journey. I see two such runs with night trains. For the first one, I see a 3.5hr. layover in Pisa from 23:19 to 03:28. On the second one, you get a night train from Venice to Florence for 3.5hrs. You change trains 4 time during the evening and night at get the same layover in Pisa. Not a fun time.

CLICK HERE to see a typical morning train schedule. There are earlier and later trains as well.

Jeff, you should check your suggestions before you just randomly say RailEurope. I couldn't find any night trains from Venice to Genoa, La Spezia, or Pisa on their sites. From those three towns to towns in the Cinque Terre are all regional connections. If there are no night trains shown to the towns on either end of CT, you certainly won't find them to CT.

Of course, Bahn.de and Trenitalia do show night train connections, but as Tim points out, you are never on them long enough to make it worthwhile.

You should know by now (it's been pointed out enough times) that RE has a very poor selection of connections.

Steve - if you are uncomfortable or unfamiliar with train travel, Euraide may ease your mind. I worked with the US office via phone and fax for several of my train segments including night trains. Have a nice trip! Michelle
