I've never ridden on a night train before but will be staying in a 6 person couchette in June. I was wondering if you just sleep in your street clothes. Also, does the bathroom have a shower or do you just brush your teeth, etc., when you get up in the morning. Do you keep your passport with you and do they check it when you cross in to Italy. Any security tips? Thanks!
Most people sleep in their clothes, though I suppose you could bring something else. There isn't a whole lot of privacy in a 6x couchette compartment.
No shower, although some train stations have them.
If your trip passes though Switzerland you will be asked to give your passport to the conductor. otherwise passports are not an issue between EU countries.
Security is common sense, like stay with your bags.
Earplugs can be helpful.
A night train is a kind of adventure--have a great trip!
A little diversion if you don't mind. . . This post reminded me of what happened on our trip. The family ended up in two diferent couchettes and in my husband's the following occurred. A gentleman made a bit of a to do with the conductor about the ladder to get up to his top bunk and a couple of other things. The ladder wasn't in the cabin, but from what I remember it was a bit of a drama. He then went off and changed into his pyjamas - which brought smiles to a few faces, and climbed up and went to bed. The conductor kept working his way down the train and then returned quite triumphant to have a go at the passeneger who had had quite a go at him. . . he was in the wrong cabin LOL. So then he was made to move to the correct cabin!
Susan: Are you an unusually sound sleeper? I hope so, because then there is a chance you will actually get some sleep. Many travelers are not so fortunate. No matter what happens, think of it as an adventure. But keep your valuables under close watch at all times, especially while you are sleeping, if you sleep. I notice that you are starting out in Paris but ending up in Italy on the night train. Here is Rick's advice: "Italian trains are famous for their thieves. Never leave a bag unattended. For an overnight trip, I would feel safe only in a cuccetta, a berth in a special sleeping car with an attendant who keeps track of who comes and goes while you sleep--approximately €15 in a 6-bed compartment, €20 in a less cramped 4-bed compartment." (these were 2005 prices in his 2006 book).
