pls advise on most efficient travel mode and route. i called raileurope USA and they gave me a 10-hr train trip that goes nice-milan, milan-terontola, terontola-perugia for $249 for 2 (not too bad). it's a little too long tho. i tried looking for airlines but only found air france which costs 800 euros (too much). our trip is jun 8, 2009. does anyone have a suggestion? and also, is it practical to buy the ticket in nice so i can find other alternates like nice-genoa, genoa-spezia, etc. thanks a lot.
Rail Europe's timetables are incomplete. The Trenitalia site gives you more choices--and the fare range is quite broad.
Nice-Ventimiglia-Viareggio-Firenze-Perugia, departing at 05:16 and arriving at 16:19, for €38.65
Nice-Ventimiglia-Milano-Firenze-Perugia, departing at 07:46 and arriving at 18:19, for €76.90
Nice-Milano-Firenze-Perugia, departing at 10:02 and arriving at 20:19, for €83.90.
Nice-Ventimiglia-La Spezia-Firenze-Perugia, departing at 10:46 and arriving at 22:22, for €28.50.
The cheaper fares are due to most or all legs of a particular route being on regional trains.
do you think it is practical to just buy the tkts while in nice?
I don't know if you can buy tickets in Nice for travel solely within Italy (your legs from Ventimiglia and beyond). However, you certainly can buy tickets for all remaining legs in Ventimiglia--or in Milano if you leave Nice at 10:02 and go directly to Milano without having to make a connection in Ventimiglia. It would be easier and faster to do it in Ventimiglia which is a small station.
thanks, tim. i might try the nice-ventimiglia-spezia route.
