New TSA procedures?

It had been a year since I last flew, so maybe it’s just new to me.

Went through the zigzag line until we were lined up 3 across .
Then had to walk across an empty area of about 30 ft., staying lined up with each other. Just three at a time. Then handed our Real ID to the TSA agent and sent off to be screened. Shoes stayed on and everything stayed in the bag

As best I could tell it was being done at only the one screening point.

This at SEA.

This happening elsewhere? It seemed more efficient than the “traditional” method.

I have Clear/Pre/Global so don't need to take shoes etc off. I fly out of SEA as well, but always use checkpoint 1 because of this. Out of curiosity which checkpoint were you at? I know during busy times they will take people from regular lines and send them to other lines/checkpoints just to get things moving.

At least SEA now has a board that shows the wait time at the various checkpoints.

PDX has a similar area, I saw it when I participated in a dry run opening of the new terminal. At the rehearsal session, there were TSA dogs inside of the area as you walked through. I assume there is a method to the madness, but not sure they're going to tell us what it is. I haven't been to the airport since they opened the terminal officially but I'll check it out in August.

Article from Wash Post - ”Why is TSA different at every airport?”

There was no change for me at Dulles a couple of weeks ago but I haven’t taken off shoes in ages as I pretty much always can go through TSA Precheck lane.

I think it was checkpoint 2.

After going through we had to take the short tram to get to the tram that serves the N terminal

I've travel to alot of major airports. SEA is one of the worst that I have been to. It is a hunred miles (ok maybe not that many) from the cruise transfer bus area to the airport check ins...and vice versa.

The electonic board that provides wait times was useless. When we first got in line it said 30 minute. My last, and hopefully the last, resulted in an hour wait in the TSA line.
