I know everybody says that I don't need to buy my tickets from Rome to Florence in advance, but I just don't want to risk it. I am going to be traveling on December 26th, 2008; but I can't but the tickets yet because the new train schedule is not live. Does anyone know when I can buy ES* tickets for the new 2009 timetable?
I think that most of the train timetables and reservations are 60 days so I would think it is already up.
You're right. The new timetables that will go into effect on 14 December haven't been loaded on the Trenitalia site yet. However, there truly is no need for you to buy tickets before you get to Rome. There are more than 20 EuroStar Italia trains each day that do the Rome-Florence route. If you're going to be in Rome for a few days before going to Florence, go to a station as soon as you arrive in Rome and ask for an Amica fare (20% discount). If any of the allotted seats are still available, you can get Amica fares up to midnight of the day before departure.
Thanks for the response Tim. I have been told that is going to be a busy time, so I should try getting tickets as early as possible. Do you think I will be fine if I buy that when I arrive in Rome on the 23rd of December.
Better than taking my guess, send a private message to Ron who lives in Rome and ask him what he thinks. You can find a post by him on this thread.
After you hear from him, please return here and report what you've learned.
