New rules for carry-on luggage.....

I just came across this video and thought it provided some good information on changes to air travel rules.....

It's late so I haven't checked the accuracy of the points mentioned in the video, but I assume they're all correct. It looks like I might have to go shopping for new carry-on luggage in the near future!

Not an accurate video. Did you notice that not a single source was cited? Some of these are long established standards, but there are no new dramatic rules.

There is no one size fits all rule for carry ons. IATA, an airline industry group, not a government agency, had suggest this universal rule a couple of years ago but few airlines were interested.

The rest of the video either mentioned rules that have been in place for awhile or got things wrong.

This video was made to get unsuspecting travelers to watch so the people making it earn money.

The size limitation mentioned, 56x40x23cm (22.05"x15.75"x9.06") would not affect very many of today's travelers. It is actually larger then virtually all US and international airlines with the exception of Southwest, Spirit, and British Air (18" wide). It's close to the regulation size for American, Delta, and United, 22"x14"x9", except going from 55cm long (21.6", most European airlines' max) to 56cm avoids the problem of US 22" long luggage not meeting European limitations. Any luggage that meet US and European size limits would fit in the "new" limit.

If you are currently using carry-on luggage that exceed airline limits by a lot, and you've been getting by with it, AND if the airlines do start checking, you probably aren't going to get away with it anymore.

I use an eTech Weekender Jr. at 19"x13¾"x9" (48x35x23cm), and it's only partially filled and squishable, so I wouldn't be shopping for new luggage.

Sorry, Ken. While I won't call it garbage (that's harsh) - it is no doubt helpful for someone who hasn't flown in the last 5 years, most of it isn't new. And some claims, like a universal size limit and weight restriction are flat out misleading.

And I want my 8 minutes and 12 seconds back.

I’m thinking maybe the luggage industry saw a dramatic rise in sales right after Covid ended.
Now, that most already have new luggage, the industry needs a way to increase demand.

Wanna get rich? Begin a startup company that builds luggage size-boxes for the airlines.
How to start the startup will be revealed in the next video….

I watch a lot of travel videos on YouTube, so I had to see this one since it sparked the above comments. I appreciate Ken’s intention of sharing info that might be helpful. But, it’s important to research who is actually providing the information.

This video is part of the Travel Hack Lab channel on YouTube. According to the channel info, it was started on 10/15/24. There are 10 videos listed. Their channel description states “we're a dedicated team of researchers and travel enthusiasts who test, analyze, and decode the travel industry.” I think it’s interesting that nowhere does it give names of the researchers and enthusiasts nor does it describe how they research or analyze anything.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. I wasn't sure if that video was completely accurate, but thought I'd post it to see if anyone had any comments on it. It would have taken some time to check the veracity of each of the points mentioned. The part of the video which covered new scanning technology which can differentiate between different types of liquids is true AFAIK, but not sure if it's actually being used at the present time.

They are available and some airports have them. However, both the UK and the EU have temporaril halted them due to some "issues."

I went through Heathrow (Terminal 3) on Thursday and we didn't have to take anything out of our carry ons.
