New luxury sleeper bus service Twiliner launches with a delay

The modern and comfortable night buses from the Swiss provider Twiliner were actually supposed to set off from Zurich to Amsterdam and Barcelona from the end of September or beginning of October. But this will probably happen a little later. The long-distance bus service's booking portal is now only offering trips from October 12 and November 1 respectively.

The luxury sleeper bus travels to Spain three times a week. It travels to the Netherlands four times a week. “Our aim is to increase the frequency and destinations in the coming weeks,” says Twiliner. Stops in Germany are not yet on the timetable. But the network is set to grow, the operators announce. According to the booking platform, a ticket from Zurich to the final stop costs from 160 euros. The journey to Amsterdam should take just over 12 hours and to Barcelona around 14 hours.

The seats in the buses are comparable to those in the business class of long-haul airplanes. They can be extended to form a flat bed and are shielded around the head area so that passengers can sleep soundly. Only 21 seats/beds are available per coach. The double-decker vehicle also has a toilet, a changing room, a snack bar and a luggage rack.

Interesting business venture. Unless you would be afraid to fly, why would you spend 14 hours on a bus from Zurich to Barcelona no matter how comfortable?

In the UK there used to be buses with bunk beds on Scotland to London routes.

The beds could be converted to seats for daytime use domestically in Scotland under the Citylink gold brand.
Ultimately the service was not a commercial success, as in night format it could take too few people, and the market wouldn't bear high enough fares.

In Europe ultra long distance buses are a big and growing market, not least among many who have serious environmental concerns about flying, especially short haul flights.

Many but not all users who can't afford night train fares.

Just the one toilet? Talk about "down the hall"...

Not quite so luxurious then?

I understand that some people have a fear of flying, health issues that force them not to fly and those who believe in the carbon issue, that might use this bus option. But, it just seems like there are not enough of these folks to keep a bus line in business from Zurich to Barcelona for example. I could be wrong. Maybe there are more people willing to spend 14 hours on a bus than I can imagine.

I also know I wouldn't sleep a wink on the bus just like a night train so I am a little prejudice in that manner and realize many people can just sleep anywhere. Always jealous of them.
