Has the new Italian train, Italo, proved to be dependable, cheaper than Trenitalia?
Nan
Prices vary (like the prices of Trenitalia also vary). Their website is much more user friendly (www.italotreno.it) Their rolling stock (the trains themselves) is much newer than Trenitalia's. Actually they use AGVs, which are the newest thing in high-speed rolling stock in Europe.
Dependable? Yes. Cheaper? Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
Last October, I rode round trip Roma Tiburtina/Napoli. Bought the ticket at Stazione Tiburtina 5 days before trip. Did this because of upcoming Trenitalia rail strike. Experience was wonderful--professional staff, quiet, fast ride. Time elapsed: 1 hour each way. Italo ran on time, arrived on time.
