I have read that high speed train connections from Belgium to Amsterdam will be opening up in late 2008 (saving an hour from Paris to Amsterdam) and from Paris to Barcelona in 2009. Does anyone know whether this in fact is true? I have been trying to get updated information off the internet with limited success.
As far as I know, there already is a high speed connection between Paris and Amsterdam: the Thalys train. Are you referring to improvements or additions on that line?
Paris to Amsterdam is currently a four hour trip. I thought that changes to the rail system effective some time in 2009 between Brussels and Amsterdam were going to shave an hour off that trip, but have not been able to find out when.
That four hour trip is the with the new high-speed segment open. The trip used to be just under 6 hours.
I just looked at Thayls.com. There is a posting saying that unti mid 2009 they are doing work on the tracks in the Netherlands constructing high speed track. When the track is open the whole way it will only take 3 hours from Amsterdam to Paris.
Here is the info from the site.
In mid-2009, Thalys will take you from Paris to Amsterdam in 3 hours. Until then, Dutch Railways (NS) will be constructing the high speed line in the Netherlands. These works will require Thalys to introduce route changes and amend its service patterns.

No, that isn't correct. The high speed train will be opening up in late 2008 from Amsterdam to Rotterdam.
The connection from Amsterdam to Brussels will be opening up later, medio 2009.
