@ Carole,

in my opinion, it doesnt make a dif on what people/govmts think they are doing for whatever good. They will just trade one thing for another - good or bad. Take the pastic grocery bags. Before that it was paper bags. But they wanted to "save the trees" so they went to plastic. Then plastic wasnt good for the envionment but its recycleabe and good for doggy poo. Now they are back to paper. In another 5+ years, it will be back to plastic.

when i used public transportation in AMS, i still get and use the OV smart card. Its still made of paper, but with the chip in it. My last time there, they did away with the "check out" part. Before, you "checked in" and then "checked out" using the smart card. Dont know if was only temporarily or a glitch.

When i take the train from AMS to the central station, its still a paper/plastic ticket that is issued.

as they menioned in the article, for "temporary" use, they will most likely have paper/plastic tickets.

happy trails.

Ticket machines will still sell disposable OV-Chipkaarts (though probably a € 1 surcharge will be introduced in 2015). They look like soft-plastered paper tickets, but they have an embedded RFID chip.
