New daytime Milano-Marseille train sales start

I don't usually post specific train changes, but I think this is an important information for many travelers here.

Thello (https://www.thello.com/Marseille-Milan/Horaires/index.html) just started selling tickets for its new train service Milan-Marseille via Genova, Monaco, Nice and Cannes.

The service is not as fast as I'd like, but it sill offers a convenient way for certain typical itineraries (like combining Cote d'Azure with Cinque Terre) that often get mentioned here.

There is just one daily train per direction
Marseille (15:30) => Milano (22:50)
Milano (15:10) => Marseille (22:29)

... but the times are convenient, especially for shorter trips like Milano-Nice.

Tickets are for sale now, but this Thello service won't start until Dec. 14. Note that Thello trains don't accept rail passes for full coverage but now offer a 25% discount for travelers with a Eurail pass (does not use a flexipass travel day).

I don't think they can do much about the speed of the trains without a major rebuild of the rail lines along the Mediterranean coast. Interesting that this appears to be the first through service that will not require a change of trains at Ventimiglia.

Even the French TGV service can't go at tres vitesse between Marseille and Nice; the tracks aren't good enough for the very high speeds.

sort of like Back to the Future ...

back in the 1970s I took trains that stopped for a while at the border and then continued merrily on its way.

I remember one time when I had been stuck waiting for a strike to end in Italy and then creeping to the French border, and then top speed and hang on for dear life to Nice.

This train will use the same rolling stock of Frecciabianca trains in Italy. So it won't be the crappy cars used on the night service to/from Paris.
