New Clear Pre-Check program available for free

For anyone without TSA PreCheck, something to consider...

A record-breaking summer travel season is here, which means airport security lines are growing and so is travelers’ stress. To help ease the pain, Clear has expanded its program that allows travelers to reserve a front-of-the-line time slot at TSA checkpoints and bypass long queues — free. Last week, the company added Denver and Minneapolis-St. Paul to its roster of nearly 20 airports in the United States, Canada and Europe.

Unlike Clear Plus and TSA PreCheck, Reserve powered by Clear is available at no cost and does not involve fingerprinting, eye scans, background checks or interviews. A few days or weeks before their trip, travelers can go on Clear’s website or app and choose their departure airport, flight and time they wish to pass through security. At the airport, an “ambassador” in the Reserve lane will scan their QR code and escort them to the front of a standard TSA lane, where they will present their ID. (By comparison, Clear Plus members who pay $189 a year skip this step.)

Just to note to others...you are not taken to the front of the Precheck line. It's the front of the regular line.

Frank II is this different than paid Clear where they are escorted to the front of the TSAPre line? We have GE and TSAPre and this is what happens with the regular Clear paid version at our California airports we frequent.

Paid Clear gets to the front of the Precheck line. Free clear goes to the front of the regular line.

Mona, yes, that's what happens. The only disadvantage that I can see is that it's not at all airports, but still it's worth a shot considering all you have to do is download a free app.

So how does a private company get authorized to have special privileges for government security operations? Is it a deal local airport authorities negotiate? And does the private company qualify you based on a security check? More private info out there.

This sounds like the reservation service that Mardee reported the airport was providing at MSP.

Well, I started to stay that this is different but you are absolutely correct, Stan. I just checked the Clear website and it is the reservation program that's going into place at Terminal 2 at MSP. Thanks for catching that - it didn't even occur to me.

This entire situation is sad.

We pay for TSA (et al) to do their job and provide security (same way with CBP and passport control).

We shouldn't have to pay anything extra (and i say this as a TSA Precheck member) for efficient security!

I have the same question, Stan.

And what happens to people who show up without a reservation? They wait in an unmoving line while other people with a “reservation” are allowed in ahead of them?

I agree with @skunklet1771 - This entire situation is sad.

My guess is that this is part of a transition to something other than the current TSA pre check program, and it will involve registering with a private contractor as the federal government "gets out" of this business altogether. Whether that is good or bad, I don't know, but I fly so little anyway that I am happy with Global Entry and TSA pre-check that I currently have, but I am open to anything that improves the experience in the future.

How about we just start tipping the TSA agents? A twenty will get you to the head of the line.

You should try it next time. But don't expect to make your flight. You'll be questioned by Homeland Security agents as to why you are trying to bribe a federal employee. (LOL)

Free- is overpriced

Use Clear- stand in longer lines.

We’ve timed it on ATL. I have Clear and percheck. He just had precheck. Guess who is always waiting on me of I use the Clear line. I won’t be renewing

This company makes lots of promises. Delivery is pathetic

Carol--We use Clear here in Seattle and it is absolutely a time saver over regular TSAPre. Only once was it the same amount of time.

No bribing the TSA agents! I took chocolates for some Christmas-time flights soon after travel was getting back to normal. TSA told me they could not accept; the flight attendants got those intended for them and an extra bag.
