New Canadian Airline.....

It was announced today that New Leaf Air will be starting operation in February to seven destinations, with initial service to smaller secondary airports such as Kelowna, Abbotsford, Regina, Winnipeg and Hamilton. Prices will range from about $89 to $149 one way. The 737-400 aircraft will be leased from Kelowna-based Flair Airlines. It's rumoured there are plans to partner with another airline in future to provide service to sun destinations such as California, Arizona, Nevada and Florida.

Pricing will be very similar to the Ryan Air model. For the base price, passengers are provided with a seat and a seat belt. Anything else is extra including carry-on luggage, advance seat selection, snacks, etc. There will be a charge for carry-on luggage as well as checked luggage. The airline feels that stowing of bags in overhead bins slows the boarding process and they want to discourage it, so there's a $25 charge for carry-on.

Service will be limited to begin with. For example for the first month there will only one Regina - Kelowna flight departing on a Sunday and a Regina - Hamilton flight departing on a Thursday.

It will be interesting to see whether Air Canada or WestJet will match prices.

I wish that the $25 carry on charge was offset by a corresponding free check in of a <21" bag.

That would truly give an incentive to passengers not to bring so much stuff into the cabin which slows loading and unloading.

As it stands now New Leaf will charge the same $25 whether you check in or carry on the 21" bag.

funpig,

Yes, that's true. The charge is the same either with checked luggage or carry-on. However, I expect they will "adjust" their practices after they begin operation and it's possible the carry-on charge will disappear. They only have a few flights a week with only four aircraft, so it's not like they're too concerned about a quick turnaround.

Well, that didn't last long!

Of course, they aren't 'finished', but are refunding all purchased tickets right now...

NewLeaf Travel Company, the new Canadian discount airline that launched Jan. 6, has had to postpone its plans to begin operations in February and will refund any reservations while its licensing is reviewed

Nicole,

An unfortunate setback, but hopefully they'll get everything sorted. The problem seems to hinge on the fact that Flair Airlines holds the operating permit, while New Leaf simply purchases blocks of seats from them and then re-sells them. It's not an unusual occurrence as other airlines have used a similar arrangement. However in this case, New Leaf didn't consider how highly regulated things are in Canada and didn't do their "due diligence". I'm sure Air Canada and Westjet are pleased with this latest development.
