I often book flights months in advance and will simply avoid considering Air France in the future. Too many other options and not worth the worry. Well done Air France.
It's a union action and not much the company can do about it other than agreement from both sides on an acceptable resolution to demands. Seems its been a tough spring/summer for transport in France: if it hasn't been AF, it's been the rolling train strikes!
This article provides a nice synopsis of the Air France labor situation and includes the recent warning from France's finance minister that Air France "will disappear" if it is does not make its product more competitive with other airlines. Granted, workers have not had a raise since 2011, but there seems to be a total lack of recognition by the majority of them of the current environment in which AF operates. AF has been hit hard by low-cost carriers on intra-Europe routes and Mideast/Asian carriers on long-haul routes. After years of big losses, it has finally become profitable again. Unions essentially want the profits to come to them (5 percent raise hike now), while management is willing to share some profit with them (2 percent raise now with additional 5 percent over 2019-2011) while using the rest to stabilize the company and to bring it's not-so-competitive product up to the international standard (such as providing Wifi on long-haul flights). The union has rejected this reasonable, fairly palatable (at least IMHO) option.
So, I'm with Mike on avoiding AF for the time being, but blame falls firmly at the feet of the airline's unions.

Kathy, don't forget the Air Traffic Control strikes.
We recently flew from Paris CDG to Dublin on the afternoon before a strike day. The strike was sort of beginning as we left, so we almost didn’t make it out of Paris.

Oh yes, them too!
